An Automatic Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (AICD) is a sophisticated, life-saving electronic device implanted beneath the skin of the chest. It monitors your heart rhythm continuously, 24/7. If it detects a life-threatening, chaotic fast heartbeat (such as Ventricular Tachycardia or Ventricular Fibrillation), the device automatically discharges a corrective electrical pulse or high-energy shock to reset the rhythm back to normal, preventing sudden cardiac arrest.
If a fast but stable arrhythmia is sensed, the device sends small, imperceptible pacing signals to gently guide the heart back into rhythm.
For rapid, organized ventricular rhythms, the device delivers a synchronized low-energy shock to terminate the abnormal rhythm.
In cases of ventricular fibrillation (chaotic fluttering), the device instantly discharges a high-energy shock to restore a normal heartbeat.
If your heart rate drops too low following a shock or arrhythmia event, the AICD behaves like a standard pacemaker to maintain your pulse.
